When to Start Planning Your International Move

If you intend to relocate to Malaysia or are considering leaving the country, preparation is vital. There is so much to do that a checklist becomes essential and should be completed as soon as you have a moving date in mind. Give yourself about 3 months before your journey to ensure you have enough time to complete everything necessary for a seamless move to Malaysia. Don’t worry about having to check everything off your list too quickly, just ensure you have allocated plenty of time to help reduce any anxiety you may have about your moving plans.

Enter the World of Bureaucracy

Unfortunately, an international move is fraught with many official requirements, such as filing documents and having your papers stamped or notarised. It may take a while before government departments are able to process and return your documentation to you, so do this early.

Firstly, and most importantly, check your passports and your family’s documents, too. If they are within a couple of years of expiry or have expired, replace them in an effort to reduce complications at customs. The same goes for your driver’s license. Research the country you are moving to in order to see if an International Driver’s Permit is required. In Malaysia, a driver from a foreign country can drive using an International Driver’s Permit for a year before they can apply for a Malaysian license.

If you have children in school, finding a new school and acquiring the documents to show their current education is imperative.

Inform the Tax Office in your home country you are moving to Malaysia. You may have to pay a sum to round off your tax for the current year or you may be required to pay your final bill next year. Keep all of these details safe in case you ever repatriate to your home country. Whether you already have employment and are moving for work or if you are finding a job once you relocate to Malaysia, your employer will likely set up your tax requirements in your new home.

Sell/Rent house

When you move, if you own your home, will you be selling or renting it? You should contact your local real estate agent or renting contractor to help you get your home on the market as soon as possible.

Remember to tell your friends and family about your move, and compile all of their contact details so you can send your new address information when you settle into your new home in Malaysia.

Look at How Much Stuff You Own

When you leave you might need to sell or give away your belongings and possibly your furniture. Arranging relocation services from Allied is a great way to start. You may be surprised at how much ‘stuff’ you have collected over the years. Many people end up selling as much as they can before their move as a great way to declutter and start fresh in their new home.
