Moving Abroad Checklist
So you've decided to take the big leap and move abroad. The prospect is both exciting and nerve-racking, and now there’s a mountain of things to get done before you leave. So how do you organize everything and what are some of the more important aspects that might get overlooked in the preparation process?
Well first and foremost, it would be a practical idea to develop a check-list. Whether through an app on your smartphone, or a program like Evernote which syncs across all of your devises, this is an excellent way to keep track of what you have to left to do, and helps you to work through it piece by piece.
Arranging A Visa
If you haven’t already organized your visa, then do so immediately. The application process varies drastically in time and can take anywhere from a week to months, depending on where you’re moving to and what time of year you submit your application. Allowing for potential setbacks and delays in your time frame is a wise idea and will ensure your visa arrives before you leave.
You've Got Mail
It’s important to get in touch with all of the organizations and service providers that send you mail on a regular basis to inform them of your change of address. This includes superannuation funds, insurance companies, banks, accountants and of course, the government.
To Drive Or Not To Drive?
If you’re planning on buying or leasing a car when you arrive at your destination, then you’re going to need to secure an international driver’s license to make sure you’re not in breach of any local laws regarding foreign resident drivers. Many countries require you to take a test to convert your current license. Please check with your local police and/or transport department.
Visit Your Doctor Before You Go
This may seem like an unnecessary precaution, but it’s a good idea to make sure you’re in good health before you go. If you’re forced to see a local doctor when you arrive at your destination, this could prove rather expensive until you become eligible for their public healthcare system (if they have one). Make sure you are up to date with all your vaccinations. Many countries will require this.
Getting Travel Insurance
Depending on whether you’re staying in a foreign country for a temporary work visa or permanently, you may be required to purchase travel insurance in the terms of your visa application. This is to ensure you are covered and don’t become a liability for the country’s government you wish to move to.
