Understanding Customs Requirements When Moving to or from Malaysia

Whether you have just landed your dream job, or you are relocating to be with family, moving to or from Malaysia can be stressful, but relocation companies such as Allied can help you prepare. When moving your household goods and pets internationally, excise on imported items may apply or quarantine for pets is a possibility.

What Can You Take?

Like many countries, it is possible to take most of your belongings, including furniture and household goods, if you are relocating to Malaysia. To bring your items without paying customs fees, you must either be a Malaysian national who has been out of the country for more than 12 months or a foreigner moving to Malaysia on a work permit. You must also have owned the items for a minimum of 3 months and agree not to dispose of your possessions for at least 6 months after the move. You must also be in the country when the items arrive into Malaysia.

Computers  & Electronic Equipment

Computers can be brought into Malaysia, but at a maximum of 3 per family member and must not be sold or disposed of for at least 1 year. Computers along with other electrical items do require an Import Licence. Items that can be taxed or have a fee levied on their entrance into Malaysia include non-household items that are less than 6 months old, for which you must have the original invoice or receipt. Plants require licenses to be allowed entry. Other important items to consider when moving to Malaysia are videos and films. These will be subject to screening by the Film Censorship Board, even if they are home movies, at cost to you. Pornography and politically sensitive media (including books, videos and films) are prohibited.

A lot of telephone and fax equipment requires a licence to be imported. You are prohibited to bring drugs, weaponry, gold bullion and even certain food items into the country. When relocating to Malaysia, remember that communist literature or any literature or product from Israel is banned from the country and should not be brought in.
