What to Pack When Moving to a Smaller Apartment

Packing boxes

Downsizing is not easy for everyone. While some people may enjoy the decluttering cleanse of throwing away many oversized items and simplifying their home to a more minimalistic style, there are just as many who like to live with lots of space around them and their belongings filling every room. If you are moving to a smaller apartment in Malaysia, it is unlikely you will be able to bring everything you own to your new home. If you’re moving apartments in Malaysia, you need to be well-prepared for a smaller residence, especially if you’ve been living surrounded by lots of furniture and treasured pieces.

Measure Your Furniture

It is possible your furniture may not fit well in your new home. Large beds or beds with oversized headboards should be measured to ensure they can be accommodated. Sofas, entertainment settings, dining tables and other furniture may need to be downsized. If you have a copy of your new floorplan with measurements, you can check your available space. You may also need to talk to the team at Allied to make sure your furniture can be delivered successfully to the new apartment. Smaller apartment blocks often have smaller staircases and hallways.

When measuring the space, leave enough room for you to move freely around the rooms. You might be able to fit everything you have but if you are going to struggle to get from one point of the room to the other, it might be easier to find smaller pieces.

Sell or Dispose of Items

If you have items that are broken or damaged and are simply not needed, throw them away. This process can be hard for some people, especially those who become emotionally attached to items, but unless you have a minimalist style in your larger apartment, it must be done. If you have duplicate items or artwork you do not enjoy anymore, you can sell these in a variety of stores or on websites. If you are downsizing from a house to an apartment, make use of the space now and sell small and cheap items outside on your lawn. If you are empty-nesters, you may want to consider hiring storage in Malaysia for your children’s belongings in case they want to rummage through memories later on in life. The Allied team can help you with storage facilities as well.

If your new apartment has smaller closets, prioritising the clothing you want to keep and selling any clothes or shoes you decide you don’t need is a good way to free up space for your new address. If you have cupboards full of items or stationary, such as old magazines you do not use, do you really need to take it with you?

Disposing or selling your items before moving apartments in Malaysia will help make your move more comfortable and reduce the work your removals company needs to bill you for.
